What a season.

April 15, 2019

This season Chelsea fans have been involved in

1) Racist abuse https://www.theguardian.com/…/chelsea-fans-banned-raheem-st…

2) Anti Semitic chanting https://www.theguardian.com/…/chelsea-uefa-no-punishment-an…

3) Sexual assault https://www.theguardian.com/…/police-chelsea-sexual-assault…

4) Islamophobic chanting https://www.theguardian.com/…/chelsea-fans-barred-bomber-ch…

And there’s still over a month left of the season.

I have a dream

October 11, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I was interested in Jose Mourinho‘s recent comments that “there is no racism in football”, in reference to the number of black managers in the professional game.

I’m not here to say there is or isn’t racism in football but I do think  the issue of black managers or more pertinently the lack of them is a matter of perception.

Let me take you back to when I was growing up [Insert harp music to indicate the passing of time]

As a child getting into football, I was aware there was a view in football that black players could play in attacking positions, utilising their pace, power and ‘natural flair’ but they couldn’t be defenders because they didn’t have the discipline and/or the footballing brain.

Over time, this idea has been disproved thanks to the outstanding black defenders we’ve seen playing at the top level, so much so that if a club signs a black defender today it doesn’t cause a fuss.

Maybe in the future we’ll get to a point where a man who’s black becomes a manager of a top Premier League club and the only thing mentioned is his record.

Til next time, stay safe!

The world’s gone bananas

May 14, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

Initially Dani Alves eating a banana thrown by a Villarreal fan was treated positively with people congratulating him for his actions and high-profile players around the world pictured eating a banana in support.

Then it was reported that Alves’ action was premeditated and that a marketing company were behind the move. It was presented in a way that suggested getting a marketing company in to highlight racist behaviour was the bad thing not the racist behaviour itself.

Which brings me on to fans who make monkey chants and throw bananas at black players. I assume they do it because on some level they think black people are subhuman and haven’t evolved from apes. Yet monkey chants and banana throwing has gone on since the 1960s so in many ways it’s the racists that have not evolved.

Til next time, stay safe!
