Is it the end of the World (cup)?

July 30, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

Nick Clegg (remember him) wants to take World Cup 2018 away from Russia.

It seems everyone else wants to take World Cup 2022 off Qatar.

Which begs the question will anyone ever host a World Cup again?

The short cut to success

July 17, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I was going to write about how after every tournament (where England don’t win) we have an inquiry into the state of our game and what we can learn from the infrastructure of the winning nation.

But then I realised there was no secret or special ingredient. Success involves things such as producing quality coaches, allowing the elite young talent to develop, by playing with their club rather than being squad players at bigger clubs. Allied with luck, good judgement and astute management, you may go on to win a major tournament.

This of course will take time, and who wants to wait for anything and there’s no guarantee you’ll win anything. However I did notice that both countries in the World Cup final are led politically by women, Angela Merkel and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. So with this in mind, for the good of England, we need Yvette Cooper to become our next Prime Minister.

Hummel-iation

July 12, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

According to Paddy Power’s blog 4 people bet on Brazil 1 Germany 7  HOW!!! In the past these people would be burnt as witches.

Talking of that game, if it were a knock around in the park, once it went to 5-0 some players would have swapped sides just to make it a bit more even. Just an idea FIFA.

I’m not sure it helped Brazil that they reacted to Neymar‘s absence as if he’d died, holding his shirt up during the national anthem et al.

After the game Mats Hummels came out and said Germany decided to go easy at half-time to avoid embarrassing Brazil, which ironically by announcing it makes it quite embarrassing for Brazil.

After beating Brazil 7-1, Germany are favourites to win the World Cup, should they do this, I’m sure we’ll be told we should follow their model. Unless Argentina win it and then the template will include producing the World’s greatest player and 10 others and hoping for the best.

Don’t be Krul

July 8, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

As someone who recently looked like a match fixer, I was interested to hear that the Cameroon v Croatia game came under suspicion for the same reason.

The way I heard it, (and this may not be true) is that a well-known match fixer correctly predicted the 4-0 win for Croatia as well as a Cameroon sending off.

My main thought, is that if you are a well-known match fixer, you probably shouldn’t bet but if you are going to bet don’t bet on something that is going to raise suspicion, such as players getting sent off.

And Finally… In honour of Jasper Cillessen, the Dutch keeper who played 119 mins against Costa Rica, only to be replaced by Tim Krul for the penalties, when have you done the heavy lifting only for someone to come along and grab the glory. Dental health issues

June 28, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I think the FA, team England, Roy Hodgson et al… should send Luis Suarez a present, because instead of people focussing on England limping out of the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica, all the attention was on him for his bite.

Suarez obviously has a problem. If a human adult bites someone once you’d be surprised, if they do it 3 times they’ve got issues, which means no matter how long he’s banned for, without proper supervision, there’s a good chance he’ll do it again.

What I do like about the whole thing is that everyone’s had their say on the matter even Bruce Springsteen. But what I like best is the level of indignation, especially from the pundits, including Alan Shearer who said of Suarez the authorities should “hammer him”. Unfortunately, I’m old enough to remember Shearer kicking Neil Lennon in the face.

I was hoping Suarez would escape punishment, if only to see the reaction afterwards. As a regular listener to football phone-ins, I think some people’s heads would have literally exploded, if he’d have got let off.

Perhaps Luis biggest mistake, apart from the bite itself, was not getting Rebekah Brooks’ legal team on the case. If he had he’d probably be in line for compensation as we speak.

We’ve been here before

June 24, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

It may have taken a few tournaments but England have finally matched Spain. Unfortunately for England they weren’t to know Spain would be no good at this World Cup.

The omens weren’t good for England, when after Sturridge‘s goal against Italy the physio broke his ankle celebrating. Feel free to let me know of injuries you’ve suffered whilst celebrating a goal, you can contact me via the comments button or on twitter @viewfromthetrev

When England went out of the World Cup in South Africa, their poor World Cup was put down to a negative spirit in the camp, but at least they got out of the group. This time, we were told it was a ‘happy camp’ yet at the time of writing they have no points from 2 games. On this basis it would appear the England players respond better to harsh conditions, so should they make it to the next World Cup, I’m thinking whips and chains.

And Finally… after his 2 goals against England, Luis Suarez seemed genuinely moved, partly because in his mind he’d got revenge for the way he was treated over the Evra and Ivanovic incidents. With this in mind, when and how have you successfully exacted revenge?

Why Im supporting Sepp

June 14, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I know it might not be a popular thing to say but I’m quite liking Sepp Blatter. For a start, at a time when people are questioning FIFA on how Qatar won the bid to stage the 2022 World Cup, Sepp announces that he wants to continue as President for another 5 years. You’ve got to admire that kind of chutzpah.

If that wasn’t enough, the other day he suggested football could be played on other planets. Imagine if FIFA awarded a major tournament to Pluto? If that were to happen I don’t think the Sunday Times would be able to handle it.
