It had nothing to do with Fellaini

September 28, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

It would appear that the demise of Manchester United under David Moyes was down to chips or the lack of them.

According to Rio Ferdinand, in his book #2Sides, Moyes stopped the utd players from having healthy chips on a Friday before a game. This annoyed the players so much that when Giggs was appointed as temporary manager the first thing they asked him was, ‘can we have our chips back?’ He reinstated the chips and Utd promptly beat Norwich 4-0 in Giggs’ first game in charge.

Although how much that had to do with the chips and how much was down to the fact that they were playing Norwich at home, is something we may never find out.

The science of football

September 22, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I’ve just finished reading ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’ by former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan.

Having never owned a season ticket, nevermind a football club, it gave me a good insight into what happens behind the scenes at a Premier League/Championship club.

For example, here’s his strategy for when he’s interviewing Steve Bruce for the manager’s position,

‘rather than the usual boring standard questions, I try to throw them off balance and get them to show their true selves’

And here’s his approach when interviewing Bruce’s successor, Trevor Francis

‘I threw in an opening question to get him off balance and see the real person’

It would appear that at the top level of football the way you choose a manager is to throw an awkward question at them and see how they respond. Who knew it was so scientific?

Also in the book, Simon Jordan mentions that he dates Sara Bosnich, the former wife off Mark Bosnich and Suzanne Walker former wife of Ian Walker. As types go, ex wives of Premier goalkeepers is quite niche. I would ask what specifics you like in a partner but I’m too scared with what might come back.

The future of football?

September 10, 2014

Hola. Hope you are well.

I read recently that the Premier League are going to close down Twitter feeds that show Vines of Premier League goals.

I’m not sure if the Premier League and the big businesses with a vested interest in the Premier League think that if people see a 14 sec clip on their phone, they will decide this is the future of football and rip up their season tickets and/or cancel their TV subscriptions.

What is more interesting is that the Premier League are so confident that they’ll be able to close these sites down and yet when members of the public complain about receiving sexist, racist, threatening messages on social networks, it’s been difficult for the authorities to impose legal sanctions. See Stan Collymore.

It may lead a cynical person (not me of course) to suspect that the law is more likely to intervene to protect commercial interests than those of the individual.
